The S.T.E.P.S. Center is hiring Direct Support Staff.

PAY RATE: $20/ hr. (Increase after 90 day evaluation based on performance)

Who We Are: A Community Behavior Management Day Program. We specialize in working with adults age 18+ with developmental disabilities in the Los Angeles County area. We provide support for people who want to become positive active members in their communities by learning/improving skills such as positive interactions when frustrated, coping skills, safety, independent skills, self-advocacy, work skills, healthy relationships, and many other skills that contribute to us living meaningful lives.

Direct Support Staff will be responsible for supporting 3 participants in a 100% community setting. Maintain reliable transportation to pick up and drop off participants at their residences and drive them to various locations in the community for programming. To document behavior goals and progress. Provide meaningful programming to a group. Will be responsible for de-escalating behaviors while running activities or groups to improve skills.

Schedule: Monday – Friday 8am up to 3pm

Successful applicants must complete a background check, physical & TB screenings, and any other pre-employment assessment.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent, Valid driver’s license, pass a background check and employment assessments. Maintain and provide regular documentation of minimum vehicle insurance coverage. Must have a reliable vehicle to use for transportation of participants from their homes to various locations in the community. Ability to remain calm during stressful situations. Ability to work alone with participants in a (3:1) participant-to-staff ratio to improve life skills, independence, and confidence and decrease maladaptive behaviors. Ability to move and stand for prolonged periods and frequently perform physically demanding tasks.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.   DSSs must understand and agree that their jobs may involve programming with individuals who due to their developmental disabilities and/or medical conditions may be combative. This will involve performing PCM hands-on crisis intervention techniques that require strenuous physical movements. This is an active position that requires high engagement from DSS. Those who are looking for a sitting, low energy or desk position need not apply. We are looking for applicants who have a positive can-do attitude and a willingness to problem-solve challenging situations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have a car?

Yes, having a reliable and safe vehicle is required to assist with transportation of participants. All vehicles will be inspected before use to ensure safety. S.T.E.P.S. will pay for the cost of inspection.

What is the purpose of a DSS?

DSS are here to support individuals with intellectual disabilities who are exhibiting mal adaptive behaviors, limited social and coping skills. DSS will provide integration into the community, help improve skills in others and assist with de-escalating behaviors that occur.

Is mileage reimbursed?

Yes, S.T.E.P.S. reimburses mileage using the standard IRS mileage rate. Mileage is included during each pay period.

Are there benefits?

Yes, we offer 401k with a match, medical, dental and vision. As well as PTO and sick days.
